The 5th China-Korea Joint Seminar

The 5th China-Korea Joint Seminar on Sustainable Transportation Systems, Sep 14 – Sep 16, 2018, KAIST, Daejeon, South Korea. http://ckjssts.org/program.html

The 5th China-Korea Joint Seminar on Sustainable Transportation Systems (CKJSSTS) is the gathering of leading researchers in the field of transportation from China and South Korea. The purpose of this seminar is to share the innovative ideas and cutting-edge knowledge for transportation research; and to establish a foundation for collaborative research between two countries.

This China-Korea Joint Seminar on Sustainable Transportation Systems was successfully held four times in Korea and China. The 1st and 3rd seminars were held in Seoul and Jeju, Korea, respectively and the 2nd and 4th seminars were held in Beijing and Shanghai, China. Especially, papers presented in the 2nd seminar have been published as a special issue in the International Journal of Transportation.

ISTS & IWTDCS 2018

ISTS and IWTDCS 2018 aim to discuss about the analysis and the technologies on transportation field, especially on traffic simulations and data collections. The world’s transportation and traffic researchers and practitioners, as well as people who are interested in contributing to or gaining a deeper understanding of the transportation analysis are expected to join this conference.

Two papers are presented from our team:

  1. The uncapacitated battery swapping facility location problem with localized charging system serving electric buses fleet Wentao Jing, Inhi Kim and Kun An
  2. Short-term prediction for bike-sharing service using machine learning Bo Wang and Inhi Kim

special lecture from Monash

Dr. Susi Susilawati from Malaysia campus and Dr. Marilyn Johnson from Clayton campus gave presentations on their research to the Masters students of the 2017 cohort.

2018 Graduation

A big congrats for all my students who graduated SEU-Monash Joint Masters Program. The graduation ceremony takes place in the Intercontinental hotel, Suzhou, China. I hope you all have a big success in your near future!!!

Special lecture from transport innovation

I am pleased to invite Miss Zhe He from Transport Innovation to give a special lecture to my students of 2017 cohort. Transport Innovation focuses on big data analysis and simulation in Suzhou. TUPA and Transport Innovation agreed to collaborate in research and development mutually.

PhD Confirmation: Tianqi Gu

Mr. Tianqi Gu has successfully passed his confirmation.

Title: A multi-function framework for bike-share system’s plan, operation and application.

Summary: Bike-share system (BSs) has existed for 50 years and experienced rapid development in recent years. However, researches of interchange between BSs and public transit is fragmentary, while the methodology were mainly survey-based. Inner analysis of trip and user patterns have seldom been investigated based on massive trip data. In this study, a multi-function framework is meant to build up for BSs plan, operation and application. Three key tasks are included: a) A before- and after- change study of new transits impact on existing BSs using massive data analysis wihle trip pattern new index is presented. b) Correlation study to understand the impact of natural factors, land use as well as users’ demographic backgrounds. c) An estimation metho dology to estimate short-term demand and mid-term demand.

Bio: Tianqi Gu received his Master’s degree in Transportation planning and management from Southeast University, China in 2010 and his Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Engineering from SEU too in 2007. He commenced his PhD at Monash University in Dec. 2016 under the supervision of Dr. Inhi Kim and Prof. Currie Graham.

New Phd program initiative

On behalf of Emanuele, Chai, Poh and myself, I am very happy to announce that in 2018 we will launch a co-supervised PhD program between the Clayton and Sunway sites of Monash Engineering.

The objectives of this co-supervised PhD program are twofold:

a) to provide an opportunity for PhD students to have a genuine international PhD experience by spending time on both sites (in the spirit of the Monash-IITB Academy program), and
b) to foster greater research links between researchers on the two Engineering campuses

The PhD students will be enrolled in Sunway and will nominally spend 2yrs at Sunway and 1yr at Clayton. The preference is for the 2nd yr of candidature to be spent at Clayton (after the students have passed confirmation of candidature) but this is flexible depending on the project needs. The program will be marketed in Malaysia as a premium package and the PhD stipend will be higher than the normal rate during the time in Sunway. During the year in Australia, the candidates will receive the Clayton stipend of 26-27k AUD p/a. The objective is to attract the very best students from Malaysia and abroad to participate. The students must be supervised by at least one supervisor from each site.

The plan is to advertise in Malaysia around mid-2018 with the first intake anticipated to be between Aug-Oct 2018. Five scholarships have been planned in the first instance. The timing has been set in line with the academic year in Malaysia to maximise the chances of recruiting the top students.
